Function and application of insulation resistance tester

Electrical systems are like plumbing systems. Voltage is like the pressure of a liquid, current is like the flow of a liquid, and electrical insulation is like the wall of a tube. Prevent the leakage of insulated electrons from conductors - the effect is expressed in terms of insulation resistance. Effective insulation resistance systems have very high resistance values, usually greater than a few megohm (m). Poor insulation systems have low insulation resistance.

In order to study the leakage of the system through the pipe, it needs to be pressurized. Since the leakage problem is most easily detected when the water pressure is at its highest, we cannot turn off the tap water in time to check the leakage. But companies can effectively limit the amount of tap water they have available so that they don't spray too much water around if a big leak is found. The ideal test is to operate at high (but perhaps not particularly high) pressure to provide technically limited water. This is exactly what electrical equipment insulation tester to do.

An insulation tester (megohm meter) adds a DC voltage to the insulation system and measures the resulting current. This allows the resistance of the insulation (the degree to which the insulation binds the current to the wire, or prevents the leakage of the current) to be calculated and displayed.

Portable insulation testers (megohm meters) typically output test voltages of 50 V, 100 V, 250 V, 500 V, or 1000 V and, as with piping systems, aim to provide a pressure (voltage) that is not particularly high. I want to find existing leaks, but I don't want to overstrain the system and create new leaks. The lower voltage is used in low-voltage systems such as telephones, networks or control lines; High voltage is used to test the insulation of power systems.
